Over the few weeks of my internship, I performed many different skills and responsibilities which varied around graphic design and media writing. I interned with a republican candidate, Greg Moulthrop, who is running for the 87th district House of Delegates. In this role, I helped manage Greg Moulthrop’s social media accounts where I would assist him with keeping in touch with his followers while also, gaining new followers as part of a grassroots effort to gain popularity. The overall goal was to help Greg position his followers into a place where they can execute a “Get-out-the-Vote” plan right before Election Day and win the race.

While Greg is not running a campaign that is entirely negative against his opponent it is important to gather data on his opponent to use in research for my communication and outreach efforts that appropriately contrast Greg with his opponent.  This requires research and analytical skills and compelling updates that are short and easily digestible for followers on Greg’s social media platforms to persuade voters to vote for Greg on Election Day.

I learned many different skill sets and graphic design strategies which helped guide me in my future internships. My skills improved in digital editing, problem-solving, and many more. I used digital editing skills to create short (2-minute videos) to communicate with voters and develop Mr. Moulthrop’s brand on social media platforms such as LinkedIn and Facebook. Also, I was able to research and understand the problems that are on the top of voters’ minds and his opponents.

My classes at Longwood have helped me succeed in this internship where I was an amazing help to my supervisor. Each graphic design you see placed above demonstrated a skill that I learned in my Communication classes such as using Canva. I created websites and these design postings mainly to bring awareness to important policy issues that Greg Moulthrop wanted to focus his campaign on. Now that this internship has come to a close, I am more comfortable with creating, editing, and developing designs for political candidates as well as for other recruiters.
